The iE-USA Student Recognition Awards recognize students for their outstanding achievements in AcademicsAthleticsCommunityVolunteering, and as iE Ambassadors for their region in the U.S. Students currently on exchange in the U.S. were nominated by their host families, Local Coordinators, or iE staff members.

Out of dozens of nominations, the following students were selected to receive a 2024-25 iE-USA Student Recognition Award.

Academics

Thriving academically in a new academic setting is an extraordinary feat, between taking classes in a different language, navigating a new grading system, and staying on top of all the “new”-ness at the same time.

The winners of our 2024-25 Academic Student Recognition Award found ways to thrive academically, whether they took a leap and tried out a new class, found a new academic passion through attending a U.S. high school, or found another way to show their academic commitment.

Congratulations to the winners:

Magdalena Schmidt

“When Magda (Magdalena) met with her School Counselor at the beginning of the year, we could tell that she was an academically motivated student. She embraced the most rigorous classes, focusing on the courses that would best prepare her for her school concentration when she returns to Germany. Ultimately, she academically challenged herself by taking four advanced science classes (one being AP Physics) and AP Pre-Calculus. She committed herself to these classes even knowing that she would not receive any credit for this school year.

Magda has demonstrated herself to be an excellent student. She is a role model and tutor for her peers. She has participated in study groups. She has maintained straight A’s while taking the most rigorous classes offered. She is diligent with her studies at school and at home to ensure her work is done with the highest level of quality. She deserves to be recognized for her academic excellence!” – Jessica, Host Mom

Marta Valladares Llavona

“Marta has exceptionally high academic expectations for herself and works tirelessly to meet those expectations. She has maintained a 4.0 during her time in Oregon and has been recognized on the Principal’s Honor Roll for every grading period. She maintains her GPA while doing ballet, volleyball, tap dance, and FBLA several days a week.” – Brittany, Host Mom

Maximilian Kohl

“Max has flourished in the U.S., exploring new academic horizons with college-level statistics while embracing the joy of culinary courses.

His dedication to personal growth is evident as he proudly stands among the top 16 in his junior class and has earned acceptance into the National Honor Society. Balancing family commitments, supporting his host brother’s development, managing chores, and participating in school sports, Max exemplifies resilience and a strong sense of purpose.” – Sterling, Host Dad

ATHLETICS

Many of our students come to America seeking out the “high school spirit” the USA is known for around the world.

Athletics are a bigger part of U.S. high school culture than in other countries, and they’re a memorable experience whether you’re a participant or a spectator.

The winners in the 2024-25 Athletics Award category showed commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication to their teams, sometimes even trying out a sport for the first time.

Congratulations to the winners:

Tola Piec

“As a host family, we were very blessed to have Tola with us for the past year. She started with running cross country in the fall and, while a knee injury ended her season early, it was still a chance to experience long-distance running competitively for the first time.

Next came basketball, a sport that she had never played before. She immediately showed her leadership and determination to succeed, ultimately being selected to play on both the JV and Varsity squads that saw her playing against teams from all over the state. She was even selected as the Captain of the JV team despite being new to both the school and the sport, which speaks to how well she was regarded by her coach and teammates.

Finally, she got to return to her track & field roots by competing for her school in multiple events. Although she’d competed in track before, she’d never done any throwing events before and was the first athlete in the school’s history to compete in the discus event and finished the track season with a personal record in the discus and a top two finish in her sprint event.” -Brian, Host Dad

Daniele Mauri

“He placed 2nd in the Minnesota Swim and Dive Championship for 2025, broke the Mankato West school record in his events twice, and broke the Mankato East pool record twice during the 2024-2025 swim season.” – Mary Clare, Host Mom

Madelaine Sosgornik

“Madelaine has dedicated so much of her exchange experience to improving her swim times. She is in the pool first thing in the morning and last thing at night nearly every day of the week, while still maintaining her grades and establishing a lifelong bond with her host family.

She was an asset to her school team and has continued swimming in a club so stay in the water all year! She even trained through a broken hand injury, staying positive and getting back in the water as soon as possible. She has worked so hard this year going above and beyond to learn how to fuel her body through a swim schedule more grueling than she’d ever attempted back home. I feel she deserves to be recognized for all her efforts.” -Kayla, Local Coordinator

COMMUNITY

Jumping into a new family, community, and country headfirst is one of the biggest challenges exchange students face.

The winners of the 2024-25 Community Award truly embodied the relational aspect of student exchange, whether they got involved with school clubs or community groups, were a host child or sibling that was “meant to be,” or had a lasting, positive impact on their host family and/or community.

Congratulations to the winners:

Tae Sung (Yohan) Yong

Valeria Hermoso Ramirez

Alex Juarez Garcia

Tae Sung (Yohan) Yong

“Though Yohan’s journey began with challenges— including delays in his visa approval that caused him to arrive several months after the academic year had already begun— his impact on our international student community has been nothing short of transformative.

From the moment Yohan set foot on campus, his infectious enthusiasm, strong character, and natural leadership revitalized the spirit of our International Student Program. His talents in sports and commitment to school activities sparked a noticeable shift: students who had previously been more reserved began actively engaging in programs and events, drawn in by Yohan’s inclusive nature and positive example.

Host families shared with us how their students became more motivated to participate in activities that Yohan was involved in.

Yohan’s dedication, leadership, and spirit make him highly deserving of the iE Community Award.” – Manuel, Local Coordinator

Valeria Hermoso Ramirez

“Valeria has worked hard to integrate herself into her community Although English is not her native language, she has participated in a broad array of activities -Hope Club, Cheerleading, Track and Field, Club Lacrosse – as well as other volunteer work for local organizations like the Food Bank, the Human Rights Commission, and the Columbia Mobile Aid Coalition. Her achievements as a foreign exchange student were recognized by Hickman High School when they conferred upon her the “Super Kewp” designation, reserved for those who truly embody a community spirit at her high school. She was nominated for the award by one of her teachers and we are so proud of all she has accomplished this year.” – Jeremy, Host Dad

Alex Juarez Garcia

“Alex arrived as a shy student who was clearly a bit uncomfortable with his surroundings and the English language. He was clearly conscientious about his studies and concerned about getting everything just right. And, he sure got it right,” Local Coordinator Natalie said.

From Wednesday Wing Nights at his local church youth group to fall and spring sports to prom and everything in between, Natalie says Alex “dove in hands and feet to Mckenzie, Tennessee,” a small town with big school spirit and a place in which students may not have met someone from another country.

“He kept up with his studies and served his community by exceeding the volunteer hour requirement, making countless friends along the way. He considers McKenzie home now. I believe that the community knows “Alex from Spain” and he is considered a vital part of their community. I feel Alex is a role model for how to do this exchange experience: do it scared, get involved, be a part of your community, say yes to (almost) everything, and be you. He is well-loved, well-known, and very special to me, his LC, his host family, and his community.” – Natalie, Local Coordinator

VOLUNTEERING

Giving back to your community through volunteerism is a core pillar of U.S. culture.

Students in the 2024-25 Volunteering Award category were nominated for going above and beyond, committing time and energy to a cause that was close to their (or their host family’s) heart.

Congratulations to the winners:

Victor Gonzalez Duran

“Victor was a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving and Christmas Programs at Saint Joseph Catholic Church. He was an invaluable asset to packing food boxes, carrying them to families cars, and translating as needed. He also helped in the same way with the toy drive for families at the Christmas Program.

Victor also assisted in an additional program served by our church (not pictured)-The Extension. He served food to men who have experienced homelessness because of alcohol and substance abuse issues. The residents and other volunteers were so grateful for his help in this very valuable community program.” – Patty, Host Mom

Esther Rivas Cuenca

“Esther has been volunteering way above what was ever expected of her. She has volunteered with her host family at a local donkey rescue every Wednesday. She has completed 45 hours of volunteer work. She has never once complained about doing this. She has enjoyed giving back to her community and I’m so very proud of her.” – Emily, Local Coordinator

Jonte Koch

“We became Jonte’s host family in December of last year, and he immediately wanted to help us in our Cub Scout volunteer efforts at a Title 1 elementary school in our school district. He has faithfully helped with Pack 127’s meetings every Monday night throughout the spring semester. He has also helped with a Friday night Pinewood Derby event, a Saturday adventure day at a nearby Scout ranch, and a weekend campout where he not only learned for the first time how to put up his own tent, but he also started helping our parents and young Scouts put up all of their tents! Jonte’s attitude is always cheerful and helpful with whatever needs to be done, and he is especially good at helping our youngest Scouts with tasks that may be a little challenging for them. He has already done 53 hours of service this spring (not counting any of the driving time we do), and he will be doing 7 more hours before he leaves us in a few weeks. The Cub Scouts, parents, and all of our leaders are going to miss Jonte so much when he goes home to Germany!” – Debbie, Host Mom

IE AMBASSADOR

This award honors students who went above and beyond in their exchange experience.

The winners of the iE Ambassador Award  took full advantage of all aspects of their exchange experience by opening their hearts and minds to learning about U.S. culture and everyday life, sharing their own culture and perspective, and growing from the experience.

They persevered, even when confronted with the challenges of living in another country and culture, and set an example for what is at the core of iE’s student exchange program. They took the purpose and mission of the exchange program created by the U.S. Department to State to heart and became ambassadors for their home countries and advocates for public diplomacy, having a lasting, positive impact on their host families and host communities.

Out of dozens of nominations, the following iE exchange students are the recipients of the iE Ambassador Award:

Midwest & South USA: Clara Bonilla Llorca

North Central USA: Hugo Campins Bustos

Northeast USA: Candela Martinez de Silva

South Central USA: Lia Janssen

Southeast USA: Giada Schiera

West USA: Marlous Weisling

(click through the arrows to learn more about each student)

“Clara is in a class of her own. She is brilliant and has a 100 in almost every class at Ooltewah High School. She has played three different sports (soccer, flag football, and lacrosse), two of which were brand new to her and sports they do not have in her home country of Spain. In both of these sports — football and lacrosse — Clara was a starting defender and contributed to several team victories and helped the lacrosse team make it to district playoffs.

Clara dives in to every opportunity head first, with enthusiasm and fearlessness. She volunteered over 20 hours at White Oak Bicycle Co-op helping with programmatic events and operations and painting the region’s first traffic garden for children (IE featured her on social media for this).

Clara is kind, a wonderful mentor to host sibling Heath, and is a joy to be around with her constant positive attitude and smile. She is brave and meets every challenge with a calm demeanor. She has been so wonderful to host and amazing to see her grow. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for this beautiful young woman. I feel lucky to have met her and privileged to be host mom.” – Kathryn, Host Mom

“I have said it from the very beginning, and I have yet to be proven wrong. Giada has been an absolute blessing not only to our family but to everyone she encounters. She possesses such a positive, joyful, loving, and gentle spirit—truly a bright light in our lives.

Everything she sets her heart on, she accomplishes—and often far exceeds all expectations! Giada has maintained a steadfast A average throughout her senior year, juggling all honor and AP classes with grace. She’s managed to attend nearly every school event, join multiple clubs, volunteer countless hours, and participate eagerly in the homecoming dance, sports games, and plays. She has forged friendships that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

When she arrived in Virginia, she was an only child with no pets—and now she’s leaving with three younger siblings and three dogs! That is, if we even let her go! From day one, she has been more than just an exchange student in our family—she’s a true member, always willing to help the younger kids, contribute around the house, offer encouragement, and listen with genuine care. I honestly find it difficult to put into words how incredibly special Giada is. This may fall short, but it’s all I can offer to express her remarkable impact.” – Angela, Host Mom

“Candela has truly thrived academically since arriving in the U.S. Despite joining with a last-minute placement, she jumped right into her classes without missing a beat. Her dedication to her studies, eagerness to learn, and positive attitude have made her stand out. She approaches every challenge with determination and grace, embodying the spirit of a committed and curious student.

Candela has been an incredible asset to her athletic teams. She embraced new experiences by joining the cheerleading team as a flyer and later playing on the lacrosse team—both of which were new sports for her. Her athleticism, courage, and team spirit have made her a valuable teammate and a source of inspiration to others.

Candela quickly became a beloved member of our family and community. She has immersed herself in every experience with enthusiasm and kindness. From school events to family gatherings, she participates with joy and helps create meaningful connections with everyone around her. She truly feels like a daughter and sister we were always meant to have.

Candela has shown a generous heart by volunteering her time in our community on several occasions. Whether through school-related activities or local causes, she gives back with sincerity and dedication, always looking for ways to help those around her.

Candela embodies the very best of the international exchange experience. She is a well-rounded, engaged, and compassionate individual who has excelled academically, athletically, socially, and personally. Her presence has enriched our lives and community in countless ways, and we are proud to nominate her as an International Exchange Ambassador.” – Monica, Host Mom

Host Mom Laura says Lia handled academic challenges with grace, got involved in many clubs at school, and even tried new classes that she would not have had exposure to in her country, even taking a piece of art to a state competition!

“She completed her required hours for the year before December and looked for places to volunteer on her own,” Host Mom Laura said. “She just went all in on everything, and helps whether she’s been asked to or not.”

“Hugo has been an absolute gem to host this year. We can’t say enough about what a positive experience we have had serving as his host family. From the moment he arrived he was a part of our family, his school and our community.

He joined the soccer team at the high school before classes even began and excelled on the team, playing the entirety of every game. He made the honor roll, demonstrating success in academics. After soccer season ended, he joined the swim team at school, having never swam competitively and ended the season with 100m freestyle under 1 minute (impressive!) and earned the ‘most improved teammate’ award and had his name engraved on a plaque at the school natatorium.

Meanwhile, he volunteered every Sunday in our church Sunday school, helping in the youngest classroom to assist his younger host-brother who, at age 5, struggled to join in the group successfully. Hugo became a depended-upon and much appreciated part of the Sunday school, and when the church hosted a weekend-long “camp,” he was a counselor for the younger kids and every adult commented on what a gift he is to our family and our community. He also helped out a few times with his host-mom’s volunteer work to help Spanish-speaking immigrant neighbors learn English. One woman in her 70s went out of her way to email his host mom to let her know what a ‘delight’ Hugo is.

Hugo made friends in the neighborhood and on both his sports teams, such that 20 kids showed up to his May 2nd surprise birthday party– a testament to how many people he connected with.

But most of all, his two little “brothers” were the greatest recipients of his wonderful presence. As an only-child back home, Hugo wanted a host family with siblings, and he was granted two high-energy, loud 5 & 8 year old little American brothers who absolutely adore him. In addition to helping at church, he coached the 8-year-old’s YMCA soccer team this winter, joined the family on many adventures and vacations, helped out at home, walked the dogs (and snuggled them constantly), played games with his host-brothers every day, and was a genuinely connected part of the family.

As the spring has arrived, Hugo has joined a club soccer team and continues to excel academically and athletically, while also contributing to our community in numerous ways. Hugo is the epitome of what an exchange student can gain and give during their year abroad. He is most deserving of the International Experience Ambassador award.” – Christina, Host Mom

“Marlous has been a ray of sunshine ever since arriving in August! She quickly made friends on her schools volleyball team, and immediately excelled in all of her classes at Westlake H.S. Her host family loved her from day one as she made friends with her host siblings baking cookies with her host sister and skiing every Saturday with her host brother. Marlous was always positive, kind, friendly, and an overall joy to be around.

She is ending her exchange year on her school’s lacrosse team and her host family and I ( her LC) have made a friendship that will past a lifetime with an extraordinary, beautiful and kind teenager from Germany. We will miss the sunshine she brings to all of our lives!” – Brittany, Local Coordinator

“She completed her required hours for the year before December and looked for places to volunteer on her own,” Host Mom Laura said. “She just went all in on everything, and helps whether she’s been asked to or not.”

North Central USA - Hugo Campins Bustos

West USA - Marlous Weisling
